Getting to know your surroundings and feeling comfortable in them is important for everyone. It's particularly important for our students so they can concentrate on learning – without worrying about how to get to their next classroom or who the teacher is.

To help students from Armidale High School feel at ease in their new surroundings while at the Duval High School campus, we're hosting a series of transition events. One is for you and your children, held in the evening; while the other is just for students, run during school hours. Please see the dates below for each event for your child's Year level.

1) Parents and students, evening tours and barbecues

So you and your children are both familiar and comfortable with the Duval campus and staff, we're holding two tour and barbecue events. We've deliberately kept these short – just an hour – and included a barbecue, which will be a great time to have a relaxed chat with teachers from both Duval High School and Armidale High School as well as other parents. On the tour, you will be taken through the Duval campus and have the opportunity to ask questions.

In addition to the BBQ and walk-through there will be a screening of ‘Most Likely to Succeed', this documentary offers an inspiring look at what students and teachers are capable of if we have the vision and courage to transform our schools. The film was a selection at some of the world's top film festivals, including Sundance and is considered to be one of the most compelling films ever to be made on the topic of schools.

  • Years 7 & 8: Tuesday 31 October, 5-6pm
  • Years 9 & 10: Wednesday 1 November, 5-6pm

Make sure you come along and get to know the surroundings and staff. Please RSVP by visiting the website http://armidalefutureschool.com.au/Calendar and clicking on the relevant event.

2) Student day tours

To give the students a closer look at the Duval campus, we are running four tours in November, one each for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. On these focused tours, the Year Advisor and support staff will take the whole year level from Armidale High School through the Duval campus. The tour times coincide with Duval sport periods, giving the Armidale High School students a quiet time to familiarise themselves with the environment, as well as some of the staff and students. Tour guides from the same Year level of the Duval campus will show small groups of Armidale High School students around. Each tour will be run on a Thursday, from approximately  2-3.30pm:

  • Year 7: 9 November, Year Advisor – Tobie White
  • Year 8: 16 November, Year Advisor – Vicki Kelly
  • Year 10: 23 November, Year Advisor – Scott Howey
  • Year 9: 30 November, Year Advisor – Kim Kelly

During Term 4, we will plan more interactive transition activities for each term next year, so that by the end of 2018 students from both campuses will be familiar with each other and the staff from both schools. They will also be familiar with the environment, along with the policies and procedures that will operate on the Duval campus beginning in 2019.

Yours sincerely
